Sensory Room
One of the special features of the Children's Centre is the Sensory Room, a safe and calm space for children up to the age of 11.
It was designed particularly with children who have disabilities in mind, or those with special needs or who are coping with stress. But it is available for use by any children who would benefit from some special time out, to help them relax or bring them out of themselves.
The room is equipped to provide either stimulation or relaxation through touch, sounds, colour and other visual features. The equipment includes colourful bubble tubes, glitter balls, tactile panels, interactive sound and light panels, a water bed and a huge range of projected images and associated sounds and music. It has set out for each session to suit the needs of the particular child. There is no set length of session, again it varies according to need.
The room is open between 9.30-4.30pm Monday to Friday and 9.30-12.30pm on the third Saturday of each month. Booking is advisable to ensure that the room is available and is suitable for each child. Parents/carers need to stay with the children during the session.
Money to set up the Sensory Room was awarded to Spelthorne Borough Council by the Big Lottery Fund Children’s Play Programme and this wonderful facility is being managed and operated by the Surrey Care Trust which runs the Children's Centre.
Spelthorne Council’s Leisure Services team worked in partnerhip with Surrey Care Trust to install the sensory equipment at the Children’s Centre.
